  • THERE IS / THERE ARE

Utilizamos “there is” o “there are”  (hay) para hablar sobre la existencia de algo. “There is” o “there are”  se puede conjugar dependiendo de que el verbo esté en plural o en singular y si es contable o incontable.

There is

Se utiliza “there is” con nombres contables en singular y con incontables. Hay una forma corta: “there’s”.

Ejemplos:

Contables

  There is a pencil. (Hay un lápiz.)

 

  There’s one car. (Hay un coche.)

 

  There is not an apple. (No hay una manzana.)

 

  Is there a pen? (¿Hay un bolígrafo?)

Incontables

  There is milk. (Hay leche.)

 

  There is not time. (No hay tiempo.)

 

  Is there sugar? (¿Hay azucar?)

There are

Se utiliza “there are” sólo con nombres contables en plural. No hay una forma corta.

Ejemplos:

  There are five pencils. (Hay cinco lápices.)

 

  There are not two cars. (No hay dos coches.)

 

  Are there many people? (¿Hay mucha gente?)

There is /  there are – It is / they are

Se utiliza “there is” o “there are” cuando hablamos de algo por primera vez, para indicar que existe. Por otro lado, se usa “it is” (singular o incontables) o “they are” (contables plural) para hablar de cosas específicas.

Ejemplos:

  There is a pen on the table. It is my pen. (Hay un bolígrafo en la mesa. Es mi bolígrafo.)

 

  There are two cars in the garage. They are blue. (Hay dos coches en el garaje. Son azules.)

 

  There is milk. It is in the refrigerator. (Hay leche. Está en la nevera.)

Structure

  1. Affirmative Sentences

There is (nombres contables en singular)

There are (nombres contables en plural y nombres incontables)

Ejemplos:

  There is a book. (Hay un libro.)

 

  There are five books. (Hay cinco libros.)

 

  There is some paper. (Hay papel.)
  1. Negative Sentences

There isn´t (nombres contables en singular)

There aren’t (nombres contables en plural y nombres incontables)

Ejemplos:

  There isn’t a book. (No hay un libro.)

 

  There aren’t five books. (No hay cinco libros.)

 

  There isn’t some paper. (No hay papel.)
  1. Interrogative Sentences

Is there…? (nombres contables en singular)

Are there…? (nombres contables en plural y nombres incontables)

 

Ejemplos:

  Is there a book?. (¿Hay un libro?.)

 

  Are there  five books?. (¿Hay cinco libros?.)

 

  Is there some paper?. (¿Hay papel?.)
