Introducing ourselves. A text and audio. Please read and listen.
In English there are different ways of introducing yourself, depending on the formality of the situation.
An example;
«Hello, my name is Dean. Nice to meet you!»
«Dean. Pleasure to meet you. And your name?»
The above examples are probably the most common and popular ways of introducing yourself.
There are others, and some you’d use in a social situations, or on a date, perhaps;
«Lovely to meet you»
«Pleasure..»
«Enchanted, I’m sure»
The list goes on, obviously the ones immediately above you wouldn’t necessarily use whilst working at a hotel reception – they wouldn’t be appropriate.
«Good afternoon, Sir / Mr. Smith. I’m Dean, the duty receptionist. Anything you need, I’m here to help»
«Welcome to the hotel, Sir. I hope you had a pleasant journey. My name is Dean, duty receptionist»
These are more appropriate examples, and whilst it’s ‘nice’ ‘enchanted’ or even to be ‘pleased’ to meet a customer, a pleasant greeting will suffice.
Smiles are always great ways of making a customer feel welcome, and a little eye contact will show the customer that you are paying him or her some attention.
On the first ‘workshop’ day, we will be practicing some of these introductions, and it will be an opportunity to talk about yourselves. I’d like to hear about your;
- Current job or studies
- Family and friends
- Hobbies and interests
- Plans for the future
Once we have introduced ourselves, the online course will be much easier, especially as we can now put a face to a name ![]()
